When a Lagosian has a Dream

By Oghenefego Ofili
We all have dreams and aspirations; some people go ahead to work towards theirs, others wait for everything to fall into place. Let me paint a picture of the typical Lagosian who has a dream; something that he/she wakes up every morning thinking about. Stick with me.

A smartly dressed young man (let’s call him Duke) was on board a plane from Port Harcourt to Lagos. He sat beside an older man (Chief T). A few minutes after takeoff, Duke in his usual manner started a conversation with Chief T. Duke told the older man about a product he just launched and how he is at the verge of sealing a deal with a particular Oil & Gas firm. This product is an idea Duke has been working on for several months now. It will revolutionize the sector and enable merchants monitor the quantity of product in a tank from purchase to offloading point. It will save companies billions of dollars in petrol theft.

Chief T is interested in this product. He asked some questions and Duke answered intelligently. The older man is impressed and decided to have a business meeting with Duke, with the hope of going into a partnership on this idea.

A week later, Duke comes for the meeting as earlier scheduled. By the time he walked into the board room to make a formal presentation to Chief T, he met other executives waiting to listen to his presentation. Duke developed cold feet, but quickly regained confidence (as a Lagos boy). His presentation goes perfectly. The board like the product and are ready to purchase. Then comes the question of which other company has used it and how successful it has been.

Remember, Duke has not actually produced any sample; he has only been working on the idea for months. He has committed all his resources for over 6 months into research and planning. As a Lagosian who always goes prepared, he showed them a short 3D video of the device and how it operates. When the board saw this they decided to sign a contract for the supply of Duke’s product. His dream came through.

Many young people have beautiful ideas, but those ideas remain dormant until they fade away. Lagos is one city where I have seen people dream with so much tenacity that when they talk about their goals, it is almost tangible. They are ready to sacrifice time, money, fashion, sleep, and food, to see a dream come true.

It is difficult to stop a man who has made up his mind to succeed. Have a great weekend y’all
