The pitiable state of the Nigerian Premier League

Founded in 1972, rated the 4th best league in Africa, boasting of stadiums that have little or no grass akin to primary school playgrounds, with commentary that makes the viewer’s actually fiddle with the remote control trying to decide whether to change the station or mute the volume…welcome to the Nigerian Premier League.

This is a League where players in some clubs are owed months of salaries, where Club buses are attacked by robbers as they travel across the nation via road to play their matches, where a Club is denied access to play at its stadium because it is too expensive to run, where only a handful of Club can boast of near full stadia when they are playing.

A poll seeking out reasons for Nigerians’ disinterest in the NPL

In a country of football-crazy, soccer-loving people, we have a league that Nigerians don’t watch on TV or live at the stadium. How and why did things get this bad?

While at the bus stop or in the bus, you hear Danfo drivers running over a group of Manchester United fans because they beat Chelsea in the UCL final; we hear of Arsenal fans getting stabbed here in Nigeria because of arguments; but the same Nigerians cannot confidently mention 5 out of the 20 teams that play in the Nigerian Premier League.

When will the appropriate authorities wake up to their responsibilities and rectify this pitiable situation? When will Nigerians flood the stadiums or eagerly wait in front of their Television sets to watch the latest matches in the NPL? When will the billionaires and millionaires that have the money turn to invest on teams in our league and constantly support their clubs like Roman Abramovich does at Chelsea?

When will our very own Nigerians who play in clubs like Man City, Chelsea, Roma and the likes come back or even play ‘retirement football’ in our own NPL?

These questions need answers…
