Arsenal end 14-game Chelsea hoodoo

As the final whistle was blown to put an end to a scintillating 90 minutes of Community Shield football, a figure so used to bowing his head in disappointment flashed a smile that seemed just right for the occasion while his opposite number who the football world has come to know as a serial champion bowed his head in shame and maybe anger. Arsene Wenger had finally gotten the better of Jose Mourinho in what seemed to be the 2nd victory over him in recent months, the first being the poaching of long-serving imposing goalkeeper Petr Cech who was at his best to deny his former team any share of the spoils.
Football aside, the match had geared up to be a match between bitter rivals as besides the two teams being London rivals and title contenders, the real battle yesterday happened to be between the two men in the dugout, Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho.
It apparently isn’t news that these two custodians do not fancy each other. This could be traced as far back as during Jose Mourinho’s first spell when he once branded the Arsenal manager a voyeur who does nothing but stares at other teams through a set of binoculars. This was one of a string of recurring war of words that eventually got to a breaking point at the Emirates stadium last October when they were involved in a touchline spat. It got even more hilarious at the Wembley stadium yesterday when Jose Mourinho stepped forward to congratulate the Arsenal players for their victory and was seemingly snubbed by Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager choosing to look the other way. Childish yeah? Well, these two brilliant managers don’t seem to be willing to share a bottle of wine anytime soon.

Petr Cech salutes the Arsenal faithful

The managers aside, Arsenal played a brilliant brand of football that had seemed to be more associated with their opponents who seemed totally lost. They mixed up attacking intent, midfield brilliance and defensive doggedness to a point where ironically, Jose had to accuse them of packing the bus. It was a brilliantly taken goal by Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who served that as a reminder to the Arsenal hierarchy that if an inconsistent Theo Walcott could be worth 140k pounds per week, maybe just maybe an injury-free Ox could be worth 200, just saying though. Chelsea on the other hand, seemed lethargic from the onset never forcing Petr Cech into any meaningful save before a 2nd half Oscar free kick. The absence of Diego Costa up front seemed to pose more problem than Mourinho thought as Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao proved that maybe, they still have a long way to go to ousting the Spaniard from the starting line-up. Cesc Fabregas seemed to have continued his dip in form from last season and Cesar Azpillicueta just reminded Jose Mourinho that maybe, a left-footed left back was needed afterall. I bet Jose Mourinho took note of all this yesterday and I bet he does know what needs to be done, he is the special one.

It was a worthy season opener for the much anticipated 2015/2016 season and the footballing world will definitely know better than judging Jose Mourinho’s men by a lethargic community shield display. He alongside his players know the league is a different ball game so we can all expect to see a different Chelsea turn up against Swansea on the 8th of August. As for the Arsenal, the world of football will love nothing more than hope that this isn’t some sort of false hope going into the season. They were community shield winners over Manchester City last season but that didn’t stop them from falling apart over the course of the season. Maybe just maybe, Wenger finally has answers.
